We Want You To Be Successful!

Whether you are an employer seeking candidates for a position or a candidate seeking a new position, these are trying times.  The “elephant in the room” for recruiting and applying for positions are uncertainties that include COVID, elections, civil unrest, natural disasters, and financial stability.  However, not only is there hope for normalcy, we see success for employers looking to hire and for candidates seeking new and better positions.  Success is achievable through key steps and actions.

As a City, County or Special District searching for your next executive or manager:

  • Provide a relatively fast application / review / hiring process for moving the process forward quickly.  The longer the process, the more likely that great candidates find positions elsewhere.

  • Consider applicants who are qualified, enthusiastic, knowledgeable and experienced but may not have the title or full years of experience.  Seek applicants that have the qualities and characteristics of the ideal candidate and in turn, provide them with training.

  • Develop and maintain a healthy work environment within your organization.  Recognize and appreciate the importance of a work/life balance, embrace teamwork, provide challenges for staff, and create a stable organizational environment. These qualities are attractive to candidates.

  • Actively search for candidates that meet the background, experience and qualifications you are seeking; don’t wait (“post & pray”) for candidates to find you.

As a candidate seeking your next position:

  • Tailor your cover letter and resume to qualifications and experiences desired by the agency; illustrate how/where you have accomplished the objectives and requirements of the position.

  • Do your homework about the community; illustrate your knowledge and familiarity about the job, community, and role of the position.

  • Exhibit your interest in joining their agency.  Think of the interview like dating.  It’s not all about you!

  • Incorporate in your presentation(s) an understanding that the agency is looking for the best candidates for the position, not necessarily to help the candidate get more experiences for her/his next job.

  • Proofread your materials.

At Peckham & McKenney, we have been busy actively supporting the success of our clients through the placement of excellent candidates.
